Neutering

Neutering offers additional safety and enhanced quality of life for your pets.

Neutering is a routine surgical procedure requiring anaesthetic. Neutered animals are generally calmer and have less desire to stray. Did you know that neutering also increases their chance of a longer, healthier life, for example by reducing the risk of certain types of cancers?

What You Need to Know

Although neutering is a short procedure, your pet will need to spend most of the day at our clinic, this allows us to observe their recovery from the anaesthetic. The procedure differs for male and female animals. Here's what you need to know.

  • Females are spayed, this involves the removal of the womb and ovaries.
  • Males are castrated; their testicles are removed, which means they won’t be able to impregnate a female.
  • Medication: Our vets may provide pain medication and, in some cases, antibiotics.
  • A plastic cone is provided for dogs where required.
  • Stitches are usually removed after 12 to 14 days.

Home Care After Surgery

Our vets will give you plenty of tips for taking care of your pet after their surgery. In general, they recover within a few days, although some can take longer to heal.

After anaesthetic, it’s important to keep your pet warm for the first night especially. Cover them with a blanket and let them rest in a warm space.

In the following days, refrain them from jumping around or having vigorous exercise. If a cone has been provided it won't interfere with your dog’s ability to eat, drink, or sleep.

As always, give them access to water and their favourite food and loving care when they seek it. Our friendly team is a phone call away if you have any concerns.
